Simon Anthony James Blackwood
Born 17th May 1948 Chelmsford, Essex.
Schools : Trinity School, Chelmsford.
Chelmsford Technical School
The Gilberd School, Colchester.Essex.
1965/67 Colchester School of Art - Dip AD Foundation - tutuors: Peter Blake, Francis Bacon, John Nash amongst others.
1967/70 Coventry School of Art - Dip AD - despite the conceptualists worked under Mike Sandle (Sculptor), Ted Atkinson (sculptor), Ted Harrison (typography) and Barbara Reis (Art Historian)
1970/71 Worked as assistant to Mike Sandle (Sculptor) and with Barbara Reis on her book on Turner in London.
1971/72 Studied under John.G.Bennett at the Academy for Continuous Education at Sherborne in Gloucestershire, there met and encouraged an ageing Gerald Wilde (painter, ‘Bloomsbury Set’) and was in touch with him until his death in 1986.
1972/80 Founder member of the Beshara Design Centre, the Industrial Buildings Preservation Trust and Rotherhithe Workshops Ltd in London. Involved in raising funds and the conversion of a group of Docklands Warehouses for use as artists and designers studios and a centre for Dance and the performing Arts.
1976 Opened the Riverside Studio Dance Centre in Rotherhithe with the first performance of Leonid Massine’s ballet “The Song of the Reed” based on the opening stnza of Jelaleddin Rumi’s Mathnawi.
1976 Attended the Beshara School of Intensive Esoteric Education Gloucestershire. Travelled extensively in Europe and the Near East.
1981 Moved to the Borders of Scotland to set up a studio/gallery and a picture conservation business.
1988 Established a new studio overlooking the Bosphorus in Istanbul - Turkey.
1989 Commissioned to live in Provence to work on a series of seven paintings for the interior of the recently restored Chateau du Tourreau, Vaucluse.
1990/ today painting in Turkey, Scotland, France and USA. Restoring paintings on canvas and panel and works on paper in the UK.
