Sandra Ratcliffe

I was born on the Island of Bute in the Firth of Clyde and grew up with some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. At school I took art as a subject, but then entered a career in journalism. For many years I was a senior journalist on Scotland's biggest selling newspaper The Daily Record...but I finally returned to my first love ART. I now live in Ayr, and once again inspired by our beautiful coastline. I have had solo exhibitions Scotland, Spain...and most recently a sell-out exhibition in Abu Dhabi.

Recent Exhibitions

I have always loves the West Coast of Scotland and so it has been wonderful to have had two solo exhibitions on the Island of Gigha. I was also invited in 2009 to have a solo exhibition by the Town Council of San Pedro del Pinatar in Murcia, Spain. Earlier this year - April and May - I had a solo exhibition of West Coast paintings in Abu Dhabi in the U.A.E. Itwas a sell-out. I also exhibit in several Scottish galleries...including Off The Wall in Ayr, The Stables Gallery, Inverary, The Castle Gallery on Bute.

Other Information

The power of the elements in the West Coast of Scotland throughout the year are the inspiration for my seascapes and coastal landscapes. I need to 'feel' a storm and will sit on a wild island shore in all weathers to get close to my subject matter...I like to paint en plein air in summer, but in winter work in my studio overlooking Arran in Ayr. There is enough material right outside my window every day to keep me painting for years to come.... Ayr Sketch Club's annual summer exhibition opens next weekend (20th July) and I have five paintings between The Maclaurin Gallery, Ayr, and Off The Wall Gallery in Kyle Street.
