Biography

David Grigor

For the past 20 years I have spent much of my time teaching in schools. I also produced a body of drawings and paintings that reflected my travels and experiences. I became Head of art for 2 London special needs schools, then moved to Vancouver BC where I continued teaching and contracted to be Head of Art for a school. I returned to the UK and continued to teach art and had other roles in Scotland until 2011. From November 2011 I became the art instructor for the Scottish War Blinded, part of the Royal Blind that caters for visually impaired and blind ex service men and women. The members and their work are an inspiration to my own approach now as an artist.

My interest in art began from the earliest age. In 1972 my family moved from Devon England to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. On return to England my passion with drawing and painting developed at school after being awarded an Art Scholarship from Brighton College. I went on to study Fine Art at Bath then became an Art teacher after completing teaching training at Greenwich University.

I have been producing paintings and drawings continuously and have sold work worldwide on commission, including Paris, London, New York and Vancouver, and Scotland. I moved to London shortly before degree in 1994 originally to work for the BBC in Woodlane London. I had a short spell as a scene painter and colour hand in the paint frame that produced scenes and floor panels for Blue Peter and Jules Holland Late Show.

About the 4 way compositions: Composing a painting as a 4 way image encourages the viewer to appreciate the complexities of Edinburgh as a unique coastal urban city and how new and modern architecture fits together cohesively around us.

Much of my work is landscape with figures using colour contrasts to highlight each work. My drawings are technical and yet expressive. I am interested in Edinburgh and how Scotland's capital can be represented as a 'dynamic, coastal, cultural, historic and modern city' in multiple ways.
