Laura Blackwood has been a professional freelance painter and illustrator for over 35 years, undertaking both private and commercial commissions. She has exhibited all over the UK and her paintings are in private collections around the world.
Laura graduated from Canterbury College of Art with a BA in Graphic Design in the early 1970's and went on to pursue various freelance assignments. She also studied at the Beshara School of Esoteric education; a school for the development of spiritual understanding which continues to influence her life and work. In the early 1980's she and her husband moved to the Scottish Borders where they organised bi-annual exhibitions featuring contemporary artists from the area and beyond. Laura believes art to be an essential part of education and is particularly interested in encouraging children to engage with art in a meaningful way. At the exhibitions she arranged opportunities for local pupils to hear artists talk about their work. She then went on to set up independent and successful children's art classes, which focused on interacting with the natural environment. In 1991 she founded a greetings card company, and illustrated several series with an educational element, featuring birds, trees, flowers and recipes.
In June 2012 her limited edition book 'A Celebration of Nature through the Seasons' was published.
It took 5 years to illustrate and is painted on 100 years old Whatman watercolour paper and the originals are being exhibited all round Scotland and
