biography: Born and brought up in Laurencekirk where I live with my wife Gladys, and son, David. Educated in the University of Aberdeen, graduating M.A., M.Litt. in English and Scottish Literature. In August, 2009, retired early from teaching to devote more time to painting.
My main interest is in the Mearns landscape itself. Working both 'on the spot' and in my studio in Laurencekirk, I paint watercolours which reflect a preoccupation with how the medium responds differently under different conditions. My main concern is to create a 'sense of place' and to celebrate the uniqueness of the Mearns. I focus at times on foreground detail, at other times concentrating on the broad panorama of land and sky which characterises the area. These and the endless rhythms of the seasons are the main themes of my work.
additional information: I exhibit widely throughout Aberdeenshire and Tayside. For more information or to see a representative selection of my work, please visit www.mearnsartist.com I welcome inquiries re commissions. Please contact me directly for further information.
